A quick guide to the island of Capri

Capri’s breathtaking beauty is legendary. The second largest island in the Bay of Naples attracts tourists from all walks of life. and is a must-see on a trip to the Amalfi Coast.

Getting there

In a previous post, I’ve already explained why Sorrento is a great hub to explore the Amalfi Coast and Capri only adds to that list. The only way to get to Capri is by sea – be sure to take some seasickness with you if you’re prone to getting queasy.

In the summer, Ferries depart from Naples, Sorrento, Positano, Salerno and Ischia. Cars are largely prohibited on the island but there isn’t much need for one.

Ferries depart from Sorrento’s Marina Piccola port and are the cheapest way to get onto the island. Water taxis and private tours will cost more money but as the crossing only lasts 25 minutes, you’ll be more concerned about soaking in those breathtaking coastal views.

Things to do in Capri

On Capri ferries dock at the Marina Grande. Here, a small visitor’s centre can be found. The easiest way to the Piazzetta (the island’s epicentre) is by taxi, bus, hire guide or cable cart.

There’s plenty to do in Capri Town. However, there’s a lot I cannot personally recommend. On my trip to Capri, I was on a tight budget and missed out on some gorgeous views and popular activities.

Outside of meandering around the town centre, hide to Parco Augusto. The entry free is minimal but provides breathtaking coastal views and luxurious waters.

Things to do in Anacapri

On the other side of the island is the town of Anacapri. In Anacapri take the chairlift to the highest point on the island (Monte Solaro). It offers views over vineyards, pines and a panoramic of the island.

The Blue grotto is only accessible from Anacapri. Entry into the grotto is roughly €13 and the boatman will need to be tipped too.

What I’d do on my next visit

As I mentioned earlier, my trip to Capri was somewhat thwarted by my own finances. On my next visit to Capri I will:

  • Stay overnight on the island – it will give me more time to explore
  • Visit the Blue Grotto
  • Take the chair lifts and cable cars
