A pocket guide to Lecce

The Southern Italian region of Puglia is largely free from tourists. Despite its off the radar reputation, there is a treasure trove of Italian culture to be discovered. And, one of these pots of gold is Lecce.

The historic city of Lecce can be traced back to the time of the Trojan wars. Even though historians are unable to confirm the Trojans time in Lecce, there are many other periods of history that have made their mark.

Arguably, the main draw of Lecce is its baroque architecture. In the 17th Century, the city’s buildings were given a refresh. A group of young and excitable architects revamped the city. It’s these buildings that leave tourists breathless.

Getting there

In a previous post, I explained why Bari is a great hub for exploring Puglia and Lecce only adds to that list.

Lecce is a short hop away from Bari. By car, the journey takes about 90 minutes. It’s also easily accessible on public transport too.

Take a train from Bari Centrale to Lecce. The journey will take a little longer than the car. However, it is the eco-friendly option. This train takes passengers through Brindisi, which is worth a visit too.

Things to do in Lecce

No trip to Lecce is complete without a wander through the city’s Baroque architecture.

First on anyone’s list should be Basilica di Santa Croce. Created from the unique Lecce stone, the church’s baroque facade is breathtaking. The artwork, statues and windows are highly-detailed and worth pouring your eyes over.

Next stop on Lecce’s baroque tour is Cattedrale dell’Assunzione della Virgine. This is one of the city’s most important religious buildings. Like Basilica di Santa Croce, this cathedral is made from unique stone that forms the beautiful facade. Take your time to wander around Piazza del Duomo and Piazza Sant’Oronzo too.
